Silent Night Christmas truce

Silent Night by Libera
Silent Night lyrics
Silent night, holy night
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon Virgin Mother and Child
Holy Infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace
Silent night, holy night
Shepherds quake at the sight
Glories stream from heaven afar
Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia!
Christ, the Saviour is born
Christ, the Saviour is born
Silent night, holy night
Son of God, love's pure light
Radiant beams from Thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth.
Christmas truce
On Christmas Eve in 1914 there was a spontaneous halt to the guns on the western front during WWI. In the lull comes the voice of a German soldier singing Stille Nacht. The British troops recognized the melody as Silent Night and joined in. There was heard calls for visits across No Man's Land. Cigars, whiskey, jams, chocolate and other small gifts were exchange between the German and British troops. Soldiers from both sides gathered for funerals in No Man's Land as they read a passage from Psalm 23.
Again in 1915 “When the Christmas bells sounded in the villages of the Vosges behind
the lines ..... something fantastically unmilitary occurred. German and
French troops spontaneously made peace and ceased hostilities; they
visited each other through disused trench tunnels, and exchanged wine,
cognac and cigarettes for Westphalian black bread, biscuits and ham.
This suited them so well that they remained good friends even after
Christmas was over.”

I also read that some soldiers got up and played soccer between the trenches - it just goes to show that depsite fighting on opposite sides of a battle, at the end of the day we are all humans.
A beautiful hub-but so poignant!
I believe Paul McCartney's 'Pipes of Peace' also alluded to the spontaneous soccer games between the belligerents. It is heartwarming to know that during the darkest days, a brief ray of light was allowed to permeate the two armies. Great hub, MM, thank you.
OMG, crying like a baby! That was a beautiful sentiment. I can only pray that such things would continue. I pray for peace everyday.
God Bless Mike, and those kids sing like angels.
Marry Christmas. *hugs*

very nice -- I've heard these stories but didn't know if they were real or not.
